I don't know anything about raves, or "field parties", but seeing live shows is always a good time. There are always good bands playing at the Meridian, or the Warehouse Live for decent prices (have never paid over 20 to see a band) and they are small venues. If that not what you are looking for, then join a group and start making friends. If you are into sports join a team. Or get a membership to the Y. You can also sign up for an art class at one of the billion extended learning centers here, this way you can meet some people and get out and enjoy the city. And clearly you haven't been to Kemah, or Galveston if you think they are trips for 3rd graders.
